Writer's Journal 19: Preparing for Project 5

freedomrayne1

Writing Project 5 is a full rhetorical analysis, taking the key ideas from projects 2 through 4 and combining them for a full picture, multi-faceted analysis. For this project, I have chosen three websites to pick from for my rhetorical analysis.

The websites that I have chosen are Arizona State University | ASU which is the university that I attend, Join Antifa a radical group which I am categorizing under community/ club or special interest group, and Treasures Website (iamatreasure.com) which is a non-profit organization based in California that fights sex trafficking.

ASU strategies for their purpose include stating that they are a leader in particular industries and research or jobs, using particular wording such as "I am a future" and listing ways that you can join the school as a student which appeals to pathos and having a gallery of stats/ facts that attempt to show you why you want to be a part of it. They also list being the most innovative school in the country over top schools such as MIT and Stanford for seven consecutive years. Much of what they share on their website appeals to ethos because they use their standing as a reason for why you would want to pick them as your top choice over anyone else.

Antifa uses strategies such as asking if you have a problem with a list of controversial political leaders from Adolf Hitler to Donald Trump, offering a short questionnaire to find out if you are Antifa material with questions that are meant to induce outrage in their audience, and having the first photo you see be of the Black Lives Matter movement to once again bring up issues that would make people mad but also be relevant to a cause that many people (even non-radical) believe in. By clicking yes on the answer to the question if you oppose any of the leaders listed, you get a card that looks written by a first-grader. This realization leads me to believe that even though it is a .org website, it is actually set up as a joke and this immediately takes the website out of the running for me.

My last pick is Treasures. The strategies that are immediately apparent are offering a plethora of information or facts, offering training for people who believe in the same ideas as the non-profit, accepting donations. offering industry and ex-industry girls free gifts and resources, and a spot to become a member to feel even more involved in the movement. This is all just what is on the surface because each of these things can form its own paragraph or more of information.

I am definitely going to be doing my paper on the nonprofit organization Treasures because I feel there is so much to analyze and discuss.
