One of the greatest joys of writing is the ability to speak freely with no bars held in a space you know to be comfortable. I have had an interest in writing since being a young girl. My family has always been very creative and expressive through words and art. They did an excellent job of sparking a fire in my soul that can only be fed through words, both read and written. Whether it was my mother performing her poetry and songs at a small night club in downtown, or my cousin Ryan Parker who was studying English teaching me all about metacognition and instilling in me a perpetual state of analyzing or, as he would say, "thinking about what you're thinking about". I have always turned to a pen and paper to convey the thoughts I could not articulate through speech especially when dealing with darker emotions.
Although I learned vital literacy and grammar throughout elementary and middle school, I can confidently say that a majority of the writing skills and techniques I have acquired have been through self exploration coupled with the interest of finding new creative outlets. Some examples of ways I have propelled myself through engaging in writing is trying to write short stories in the style of a novel I am reading, or writing lyrics to a beat practicing my rhythm and flow. I also study poems and learn about the structure and idea surrounding each before practicing my own hand at it, left handed by the way and I'd like to say we are just as creative as the rumors say we are. I try to write poetry at least once or twice a week but it is always my go to when I am in need of getting something off of my chest.
I would like to believe that I have a pretty solid foundation in working with the habits of mind in my writing. A majority of the habits have been brought to my attention at such a young age that reflecting on it I am realizing just how long I have been doing some of this stuff for. This course will be able to amplify my abilities by challenging me to really think about the habits I am using and engaging in a constant process of fine tuning my writing to the specific criteria being required. I am excited to learn and grow developing a more fundamental approach to writing as opposed to creative writing.
